The Light We Carry

Written by Michelle Obama

In her most recent book, Michelle Obama shares with the reader some wisdom from her own mother about parenting and teaching responsibility.

1. Teach your kids to wake themselves up.

2. It isn’t about you. Good parents are always working to put themselves out of business. Michelle says that her parents wanted to “help us kids learn to get on our feet and stay on our feet, not just physically, but emotionally.”

3. Know what’s truly precious. Is it things or people? Is it time together, enjoying the individuality of each person?

4. Parent the child you’ve got. Let each child be themselves.

5. Come home. We will always like you here. “Home is where you would always find gladness.”
