Storyland Peaceful Pirate Spring Camp in Fresno, California
In Spring of 2025 in Fresno, California an exciting Peaceful Pirate Spring Camp was experienced by fifteen children and four teachers. It was held at a children’s park called Storyland.
This site is a very foresty type environment displaying several interactive children’s stories of nursery rhythms. A new huge wooden pirate ship will be installed this Fall, this being the reason for our spring peace camp incorporating the word pirate. We then focused on experiencing our peace camp activities as peaceful pirates.
We also blended our activities to include STEM. Our local Fresno County Superintendent of Schools generously supported STEM and Peace Education as the focus during this weeklong event.
The STEM hands-on exploration with open-ended problem solving connected to the children’s interest entwined well with the peace education philosophy .The children identified, imagined, planned, created, tested, and improved how to build a pirate ship together, to fit six mates. The peaceful characteristics of cooperation, collaboration, and coordination highly supported the whole learning process.
Other peace activities shared were Peaceful Pirate Yoga, Peaceful Pirate Meditation, Peaceful Pirate Breathing, and ASL Signing of Peaceful Pirate. Daily we played whole group peace games. Those included Peaceful Pirate Ship on the Move, Peaceful Pirate Musical Islands, Peaceful Pirates Walk the Plank, Peaceful Pirate Line Up – No Words, and Peaceful Pirate Treasure Map.
Yes, having Storyland, the children, and the teachers experience the Peaceful Pirate Spring Camp was rewarding. In fact, one of the teachers, who for the first time experienced Peace Education, stated “I can’t believe the children actually worked together during the group peace games.” For myself, that was the greatest reflective comment to hear.
