Imogene’s Antlers

Imogene's Antlers. Written and illustrated by David Small.

Reviewed by Dionne Clabugh

Imogene has a few problems to solve, and we notice that she is more than capable. But, some of the adults just don’t know what to do! Other adults have ideas about how to put those antlers to good use, which makes Imo- gene smile - antlers can be useful! Imogene’s family makes a decision about the antlers, but sometimes one solution leads to new prob- lems. Whew, the day ends and sleep provides rest from a busy day. And waking up brings a new adventure!

This delightful story shows different waysthat various people cope with adversity. Al- though some economic diversity is portrayed, readers and listeners are encouraged to no- tice how much “problem solving diversity” there can be in one family. This can invite imaginative conversation amongst young readers in response to open-ended ques- tions such as, “How might ____ feel?” or “How did Imogene solve ____ problem?” or “What could ____ do next?”

This wonderful read-aloud story for first and second graders can last about 5 minutes or be discussed and perused much longer. David Small’s writing invites listeners to think and wonder, and his illustrations invite listen- ers to consider thoughtfully - there is so much to notice that there’s almost a second story in the illustrations!
